Diagnosis and treatment of obesity
Obesity is a medical condition in which there is an excess body fat. It is not just being fat but being overweight to the extent that it is harmful to the person's health. Being obese can cause various health and medical problems in a person. Obesity is calculated in relation to the BMI (body mass index). The BMI range for a normal weight person is 18.5-24.9. A BMI of 30 or higher is the range of obesity. People having such BMI should consult their doctors immediately. Other test can be the waist circumference. A BMI of 40 or above is considered to be severe or morbid obese.
Obesity is the cause of many physical and mental illnesses. Obese people are susceptible to many diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart diseases, cancer, obstructive sleep apnea, osteoarthritis. Obesity is common people who have excessive food consumption and are inactive. Other reasons can be due to genetic susceptibility, medication, endocrine disorders, or psychiatric disorders.
Obesity can be treated by including dieting and physical exercise in the daily routine. The diet should be such that is low energy dense. Food that is high in fat and sugar should be avoided. The consumption of foods rich in dietary fiber should be increased. In the case of failure of these measures or in order to supplement these measures anti-obesity drugs can be prescribed. These drugs will reduce appetite. In extreme cases surgery is advised. Other measure can be to place intragastric balloon. This balloon will reduce the volume of volume of the stomach.
Obesity can cause death. But, it is also one of the illnesses that can be prevented. Adults and children are both prone to this disease. Today obesity is a social stigma. Fast food is considered to be a big reason for the widespread epidemic. It is advised to replace the fast food menu with organic food. The obesity statistics shows that the obesity has approximately doubled worldwide since the1980. The lifestyle of the present day is also another reason to be blamed. Sitting long hours in front of the computer screen or television inhibits any physical activity. A active lifestyle is the key to stay clean of obesity.
